"Best Ofs" in Amsterdam

Best Sports Bar:  The Satellite Sports Cafe on the Leidseplein, which specializes in pancakes but offers many other specialties, great for breakfast.  Huge selection of TV sports events from all over the world on two levels.  Hotel the Globe also has an excellent sports bar.

Best Outdoor Cafes: The Leidseplein, in good weather this scenic plaza is packed with people having a drink or people watching.  The Rembrandtplein is another excellent spot as is Dam Square.   There are also many canal side cafes and terraces to stop at as you walk throughout the center of the city.

Best Late Night Snack:  The Burger Bar, located near the Yellow Bicycle Shop and the Kolk stop on tram lines 1,2 & 5.  Delicious burgers and frites, with multiple choices of hamburgers and sauces.  Open late til 3 am.

The fastest and cheapest way to get from Schiphol Airport to Central Station in the center of Amsterdam is by train, there is a train station in the airport with trains departing every 15 minutes or so, the fare is about 4 euros.   Once at the Central Station you can hop on a tram which leave from directly in front of the station to get to your hotel, total cost from the airport to your hotel about 5-6 euros compared to approximately 40 euros by taxi.  There is also a hotel shuttle bus service which will take you directly to your hotel from the airport for 15 euros or so per person.

Safety and Security in Amsterdam

Guard your valuables while on your stay in Amsterdam, which means watching your bags wherever you are, in a pub, coffee shop or internet cafe, left unattended even for a moment and you are asking for trouble.  That includes leaving valuable items such as cameras, passports or money in your hotel room laying about.   These should always be locked up in your suitcase or in a hotel or room safe when you are out.   Pickpockets are something else to be aware of but seem to be less prevalent than thieves who are looking for purses and bags that are easy targets.  Walking in Amsterdam is generally safe day or night.
